AI SEO Tools for Small Business: What Actually Works on a Budget
The Problem with Enterprise SEO Tools
The price for enterprise SEO software is between $200-$500 per month. And if you run a small business or a startup company, there simply isn’t enough money in the budget for such expenses.
For the last four months, I was doing SEO for my own project, Humanize AI Pro. The whole budget for tools does not even reach $50. But during this period, the organic traffic increased from 0 to 40 thousand views per month.
Now let’s talk about all the tools I use and their prices.
The Tools That Actually Move the Needle
Not all AI SEO tools matter equally. Some help you save up to five minutes. Other SEO tools have the potential to completely shift your traffic trajectory. This article focuses on the latter category.
Keyword research: SEMrush or Ahrefs free tools. Both provide free access, which is limited. SEMrush provides ten keyword search possibilities per day on their free plan. This number is sufficient even for a small business. I use it to find keywords with low KD below thirty and decent volume of at least a hundred.
Content generation: ChatGPT or Claude. One can pick either to write the initial content draft. I use ChatGPT-4o. The important thing to remember is to avoid using it for the final product since raw AI texts do not pass the Google quality checks and do not generate any traffic.
Content humanization: Humanize AI Pro. What small companies tend to ignore is the stage that is crucial for content ranking. I use Humanize AI Pro to edit the AI-written texts since it helps me remove the sentence structures and phrases that will raise alarms in detectors and quality filters. Otherwise, my content stayed at page 3 forever.
Technical SEO: Google Search Console. Free. Offers all necessary data for identifying the problems of indexing and content ranking. Also, it can serve as an important tool to identify content-related opportunities. I check it once a week – every Monday morning.
Internal linking: Link Whisper or manual. Link Whisper requires $77 subscription per year. But even if one does not have the funds to get the software, it is still possible to create internal links manually. And the latter is among the most effective SEO activities since it generates traffic and is free of cost.
The Weekly Workflow: Keyword to Published Article
These are my weekly steps to create SEO content.
Monday: Look at Search Console to see which searches bring impressions but not many clicks. Those will be keywords where I rank in positions 2 and 3. Choose two and work on them in the week.
Tuesday: Evaluate keyword difficulty in SEMrush. For KD less than 40, write the piece. If it is greater than 60, search for a long-tail version.
Wednesday-Thursday: Create the first draft using ChatGPT. Provide a comprehensive outline of the article, its keyword, and examples of the tone to set. Then edit the draft. Make sure to add some personal experience, hard facts, specific examples, and run it through Humanize AI Pro.
Friday: Publish the piece, submit the URL to Search Console for indexing, and create some internal links to it from other articles.
It takes me around 6 to 8 hours per week to make two pieces of content. In three months, I started ranking my articles in position 1 for keywords whose KD was less than 30.
What to Skip
A lot of tools were tried but proved ineffective.
AI SEO tools, such as Surfer SEO and Clearscope, cost between $49 to $199 monthly subscription. These tools provide an assessment of the content and its competitors' pages. This information can be helpful, but not crucial; the same effect can be achieved manually by assessing what information is covered in the top five pages that use the target keyword and adding some unique content to one's article.
Automated link builders offer low-quality links or even spammy services that will bring one in trouble with Google. It is recommended not to invest money into such tools.
AI article spinners vs. humanizers have to be distinguished as the two serve very different purposes. Spinners use synonyms and make articles less readable. Humanizers reorganize sentence structures to achieve similar results. It is important as spun articles can negatively affect search engine ratings, whereas humanized articles improve them.
Additional rank tracking tools besides Search Console might come in handy for bigger businesses. However, at this moment, Search Console provides enough information.
Monthly Cost Breakdown
| Tool | Cost | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT Plus | $20/mo | Content drafts |
| Humanize AI Pro | $9/mo | Content humanization |
| SEMrush Free | $0 | Keyword research |
| Google Search Console | $0 | Technical SEO + tracking |
| Link Whisper | $6.40/mo | Internal linking |
| Total | $35.40/mo | Full SEO workflow |
Under $36 a month for the entire process of SEO. This is cheaper than most programs charge for even the basic plan.
To reduce expenses even more, you can remove Link Whisper from your budget and manually link to pages on your site. Also, remove ChatGPT Plus and revert to using either its free version or Claude’s free program.
The Bottom Line
There is no need for expensive SEO tools in small businesses. All one needs is a persistent effort to follow through with the fundamentals, which include identifying low competition keywords, creating an article that captures the whole essence of the subject matter, adding a human touch to it so that it does not get flagged by quality filters, and creating interlinks.
SEO tools are only meant to expedite the process, and one should begin with the free ones and progress to the paid ones only if the former become restrictive. If one is using more than $50 worth of SEO tools per month and still getting no results, the issue could be with the process itself, not the tools. Try Humanize AI Pro's free SEO services now.
