The 7 manual techniques I tested

I took the same ChatGPT essay and rewrote it seven different ways, then submitted each version to all three detectors.

Technique 1: Just change some words (synonym swapping)

I went through and replaced words with synonyms. "Utilize" became "use." "Comprehensive" became "full." Basic find-and-replace work.

Technique 4: Rewrite the opening and closing paragraphs from scratch

I deleted the first and last paragraphs entirely and wrote new ones from my head. Left the middle sections as-is.

Result: Turnitin 52% AI. GPTZero 48% AI. Decent but the untouched middle still gets flagged.

AI intros and conclusions follow recognizable patterns. Replacing them helps, but detectors analyze the whole document, so leaving the body unchanged limits the improvement.

Technique 5: Read it aloud and fix anything that sounds weird

I read the essay out loud and changed every phrase that sounded stiff or unnatural. "It is important to note" became "here's the thing." "Additionally" became "also" or just got deleted.

Result: Turnitin 28% AI. GPTZero 22% AI. Actually pretty good.

Reading aloud catches patterns your eyes miss. Stiff AI transitions and hedging phrases stand out immediately when you hear them. This is slow (took me 45 minutes for 2,000 words) but effective.
